Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities

Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities The Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) is the first bilateral young academy worldwide.

AGYA promotes research cooperation among outstanding early-career researchers from all disciplines who are affiliated with a research institution in Germany or any Arab country. The academy provides partnership-building opportunities and funding to support the innovative projects of its members in various fields of research as well as in science policy and education. Four public Calls for Membership have been issued to date directed towards excellent early-career scholars from various disciplines based in the 22 Arab countries and in Germany. From among the hundreds of applicants, fifty eight members– in equal number Arab and German scholars – have been selected to join AGYA since 2013. AGYA Members set up various joint projects and initiatives in the framework of interdisciplinary working groups addressing topics such as Arab and German Education; Common Heritage and Common Challenges; Energy, Water and Environment; Health and Society; Innovation; and Transformation. In relation to the format and content of its academic activities, AGYA is independent. The Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) was established at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) in 2013 as the first bilateral young academy worldwide.

From both global and local perspectives, there are strong reasons to promote #energyefficiency—but how can people actually be motivated to consume less energy?

#AGYA members Marc Ringel, Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Umwelt Nürtingen-Geislingen, and Djamel Djenouri, CERIST- Centre de recherche sur l'information scientifique et technique, together with Roufaida Laidi, CERIST, look into a promising path towards greater energy efficiency: 'By simulating lighting, heating and cooling operations in a model single-family home equipped with modest automation, we show that individual actors can be led to pursue energy efficiency out of enlightened self-interest. Our findings show that smart home technology provides an attractive path for advancing energy efficiency goals.'

Their article 'Multiple Benefits through Smart Home Energy Management Solutions—A Simulation-Based Case Study of a Single-Family-House in Algeria and Germany' is now published in the journal Energies and available online: www.mdpi.com/1996-1073/12/8/1537

Artificial Intelligence (#AI) and #BigData: all hype or the real deal? As part of AGYA’s Annual Conference 2019 in Berlin, President of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW) Martin Gröschel spoke to #AGYA members and interested members of the public about what industry, academia and society can expect from data science in the near future.

While recognizing the great potential of machine learning and artificial intelligence to advance science and society, Gröschel cautioned that we must not exaggerate our expectations. In terms of data, he warned, ‘if we put garbage in, we’ll get garbage out’, and though machine learning has made breakthroughs in correlation-based problems, we still have a long way to go before machines can match humans’ ability for causal inference and imagination.

Complimenting the data discussion, musical contributions from AGYA member Rami Chahin punctuated the evening event, combining math and aesthetics in spectral microtonal compositions based on modifications of tonal colors and the mixing of Arabic and Western sound concepts.

What does it sound like if you cross a sudoku puzzle with traditional microtonal Arabic music and European spectral music of the 20th century? With his computer-supported compositions, #AGYA member Rami Chahin, composer and musicologist, builds bridges between different music cultures as well as between maths and aesthetics. Come and listen!

Next Tuesday, 16 April, 7 pm, at Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW) in Berlin.

The concert takes place in the framework of the keynote lecture on 'Data Science and Artificial Intelligence' by Prof. Dr. Martin Grötschel, President of the BBAW. The contemporary pieces will be performed by pianist Nico A. Stabel, qanun player Hesen Kanjo, mezzo-soprano Stefanie Golisch, and cellist Graham Waterhouse.

Today is World-Stories-Day! 🧞
How ancient stories and tales traveled from the Arab world to Europe and developed over space and time, you will soon find out in our forthcoming exhibition „Cinderella, Sindbad & Sinuhe. Arab-German Storytelling Traditions“, which will open on April 18th in the Neues Museum Berlin. We are already working hard behind the scenes to provide a unique experience about storytelling traditions from the Arabian Nights to the Brothers Grimm for all our visitors. There will be a special installation at the Greek Courtyard that will let us dive into the world of oral traditions and storytelling.

The ‘9th International Symposium on Plant Senescence’ starts off this Monday!

Increasing food production is vital for sustainable human development. According to the Plant Treaty - UNFAO, the prevalence of undernourishment increased by 25% in the MENA region over the past 12 years.

At the same time, challenges such as climate change pose an increasing threat to crop agriculture, with increased yield losses. Understanding the phenomenon of senescence in plant cells lies at the centre of increasing crop yield and crop resistance under worsening conditions due to climate change.

The ‘9th International Symposium on Plant Senescence’ from 1-4 April in Berlin, organized by AGYA member Salma Balazadeh, will address major breakthroughs in plant senescence and aging research. In her AGYA project ‘Capacity Building in Modern Crop Science’, she teams up with her AGYA colleague Prof. Dr. Bassam Alameddine to facilitate the participation of young researchers from Arab countries in the symposium.
