Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities

Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities The Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) is the first bilateral young academy worldwide. It was founded in 2013.
AGYA promotes research cooperation among outstanding early-career researchers from all disciplines who are affiliated with a research institution in Germany or any Arab country. The academy provides partnership-building opportunities and funding to support the innovative projects of its members in various fields of research as well as in science policy and education. Six public Calls for Membership have been issued to date directed towards excellent early-career scholars from various disciplines based in the 22 Arab countries and in Germany. From among the hundreds of applicants, fifty members– in equal number Arab and German scholars – have been selected to join AGYA since 2013. AGYA Members set up various joint projects and initiatives in the framework of interdisciplinary working groups addressing topics such as Arab and German Education; Common Heritage and Common Challenges; Energy, Water and Environment; Health and Society; Innovation; and Transformation. In relation to the format and content of its academic activities, AGYA is independent. The Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) was established at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) in 2013 as the first bilateral young academy worldwide.

What are the challenges in analysing social and political dynamics in the Middle East and North Africa one decade after the Arab uprisings of 2010/11? #AGYA members Jan Busse and Jan Völkel together with André Bank from the GIGA Institute of Middle East Studies (GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies) address this question in an authors’ workshop ‘Facing the Facts on Tremulous Grounds’ in Hamburg, 30−31 January 2020. The workshop is devoted to a special issue focusing on the specific problems which context-sensitive knowledge production on the Middle East is encountering on both a theoretical and an empirical, practical level. Invited experts from Egypt, Lebanon, Denmark, United Kingdom, USA and Germany working in the fields of Political Science, Sociology, Middle Eastern Studies, Anthropology, History and Media Science will provide their expertise on the topic.

Emergent Materials & Water-Energy Nexus: Concepts, Methodologies and Future Applications

In the field of Water-Energy Nexus (WEN) studies the new term 'emergent materials' (EM) has become of high relevance, because of the strong link between novel materials and energy applications. The aim of the AGYA project was to organize a workshop with international experts and a practical training course for Arab and German students to build a sustainable interdisciplinary network and to discuss different aspects and developments of WEN and EM. More than 100 scholars and stakeholders from more than 17 countries exchanged their views in the research areas of nano- and hybrid materials, advanced sustainable technologies, as well as latest research results in membrane technology and application areas for graphene. The workshop and training were held in Egypt at the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology and Fayoum University.

Upcoming Events

The protection of human rights is as much a global and national concern, as it is a regional effort. However, despite universal reach of human rights, there are still many regional challenges, like protection gaps or the lack of enforceability. The #AGYA Conference ‘Regional Human Rights Systems from a Comparative Perspective’ addresses these problems by looking at regional human rights mechanisms in Europe, America, Africa and the Arab World to identify their achievements and challenges they currently face. While some of the human rights systems are subject to current discussion, there are very few comparative studies of the different systems. The conference brings together high-level scholars from the fields of human rights law, social and political science to stimulate a discussion to fill this void. The conference takes place at the European University Institute, Florence, Italy from 12−13 December 2019.

‘More than 40% of the food produced for human consumption across the Sub-Saharan African countries is lost or wasted’, says #AGYA member Amro Eltayeb. Most of these losses occur at the post-harvest and harvesting process stages, one of the reasons being a lack of appropriate drying facilities, such as for dates. Dates as traditional food are one of the most important agricultural products in Sudan and the Northern River Nile States. They represent a major nutritional base and ensure an important source of income for the farmers along the Nile. In response to this challenge AGYA members Amro Eltayeb, National Center for Research in Sudan and Philipp Blechinger, Reiner Lemoine Institute Berlin together with their students developed and built a low-tech and low-cost open source prototype of a solar-powered date dryer in a students´ workshop in Berlin. The manual was handed over to the National Center for Research in Sudan where a solar dryer is currently under construction. Learn more on this project here: https://bit.ly/2sxjtjr
