Global Production Network

Nafta Films has developed a great system to circumvent the need for the physical presence of the director, client, or agency on set. Awesome work guys, hope to see you on set soon!

Solving the remote shoot - Over the past month Nafta Films, GPN's partner in Baltics (Estonia / Lithuania / Latvia), has been putting together people and developing resources to achieve the most effective way to produce remote productions.

We're excited to share the making of video related to the system NAFTA developed and successfully tested. What do you think? Could this work for your next project?

---

Here's how it worked:

- Streaming video via Qtake Monitor - on tests they did with European directors and agencies, the delay was less than a second, which allowed the director to cue actors and camera in real time.
- Director communicated with actors via a separate iPad with FaceTime which allowed both parties to see each other’s faces in real time.
- Voice communication for crew was done via Discord - a very user friendly app that simulates digital walkie-talkie channels.
- Agency, client and foreign production had a separate video chat of their choice (Zoom, GoMeeting, etc) which they used to talk to each other.

For many years Cramo Estonia has been our partner for various heavy equipment needed for our effects. They just released a cool time lapse of the assembly of a rain rig on the set of O2 film.

Kuidas sünnib filmimaagia? 🎥✨
Läinud nädalal taastati Vabaduse väljaku ääres O2 filmi võtete jaoks tenniseväljakud. Cramo tõstukid mängisid seal kaameramehe taevassetõstja ja vihmalooja abilise rolli. 🎬

30/03/2018

We managed to put in a few solid hours of methodical testing of the Nucleus-M wireless lens control system against an industry standard Arri WCU-4 yesterday.

We had two cameras set up side by side, both equipped with a wireless video links (Nyrius Aries Pro and Teradek Bolt 500 respectively) to a handheld monitor. The focus of the tests was to compare the usable wireless range as well as try to replicate the now infamous interference issues in a controlled environment. To keep things simple we only used one motor from both systems but for completeness I did have the right handle powered up as well.

On its previous job the Nucleus had been set up to use channel 1 which turned out completely unusable after I switched on the Nyrius - it looks like there was interference on the channel that caused the motor to move in random jerks instead of a smooth continuous motion - I can very well see the a reason for all the negative feedback from people who have had this happen to them on a busy set. It took a couple of tries and power cycles for me to find a clean channel but once I had it up and running, it was solid for the rest of the day. Wireless power was set to "low" on all components since there was no reason to change it.

For the actual tests, we set the cameras side by side in the parking lot and, walking side by side, gradually increased the distance while continuosly moving the motors and keeping an eye on the flying monitors to catch any signal glitches.

Everything was smooth on both systems until we reached the other end of the parking lot some 40 metres away and crossed to the opposite side of a street. With traffic moving between the monitors and cameras the video links were first to go down. As I expected, the Nyrius gave up before the Teradek which we could stretch to about 80 metres (line of sight).

As for the FIZ units, the WCU-4 started losing signal at the extreme edge of video range while the Nucleus had no issues whatsoever. I even tried hiding behind a solid metal power substation housing big transformers with my partner in crime keeping an eye on the monitor but could not get the Nucleus to lose signal.

We also briefly tested the torque of the Nucleus - it was fine at 30% (low) with smaller lenses but when used to focus a 40mm Ultra Prime it started lagging on crash pulls until I increased the torque to 50% (medium). With the updated motor firmware from Tilta, autocalibration performed flawlessly without any glitches or need to manually hold the motors.

The wireless communication between components of the Nucleus-M, and integrated displays make setup changes a breeze. The small screens were a bit hard to read in direct sunlight but not impossibly so. The layout and navigation of the menu system is somewhat counter-intuitive (i.e. takes a manual and some time to get used to). A combination of clicks, double clicks and long presses combined with the tiny menu buttons means changing settings takes some fidgeting but that’s nothing to seriously complain about.

In conclusion I think the Nucleus-M is a great system that can easily hold up its own against the industry standard WCU-4 for a fraction of the price. It is perfectly adequate cost-effective solution for indies and owner-operators which can also be considered its primary target group.

However, I would not say it is quite ready to appear on high-profile productions just yet - the possibility of the entire system going totally haywire because of interference on the selected channel without any warning, indication or a good way of finding a clear channel can be anything from mildly annoying or embarrassing to absolutely catastrophic if it happens at the wrong moment. If and when Tilta figures out a firmware or hardware fix to that issue, I would not hesitate to bring it on any set big or small.

Many thanks to Anders Meister and Cineunit for their time and equipment!
