#repost from @portlandstateresearch

Quanta Magazine spoke with @compscipdx Melanie Mitchell about how AI can make analogies and where this field might need to head next.

“One of the theories of why humans have this particular kind of intelligence is that it’s because we’re so social. One of the most important things for you to do is to model what other people are thinking, understand their goals and predict what they’re going to do. And that’s something you do by analogy to yourself. You can put yourself in the other person’s position and kind of map your own mind onto theirs. This “theory of mind” is something that people in AI talk about all the time. It’s essentially a way of making an analogy" Mitchell says

Our Health in Wildfire Season Webinar

When: Monday, June 28th, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Although it is only June, we are experiencing temperatures in the upper 90’s and wildfires are already burning throughout our state. While no one wants to repeat the severe air quality crisis of last summer, we also know it’s essential to be prepared.

You are invited to join a webinar, Our Health in Wildfire Season to learn more about how to protect yourself from the effects of wildfire smoke. Neighbors for Clean Air (NCA) and Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility (OPSR) will be sponsoring this event. We will be joined by:

- Mechanical Engineering, assistant professor Elliott Gall will cover how smoke enters the home and ways to create a cleaner air shelter within your home, including different types of filters and air purifiers.e to its effects, and possible modes of protection.

repost from @portlandstateresearch

When Rich Becker decided to try a new career at @mcecs_pdx to pursue a computer science @compscipdx degree, he had already earned two degrees. In 2020, Rich made a provision in his estate plans to support the next generation of PSU scholars. “Rich liked that PSU was conveniently located downtown and that many of his fellow students had work and life experience, much like him. Rich also attended UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz but what made Portland State stand out to him was the professors’ dedication to teaching.”

#Repost from @portlandstate

This spring, Yves Wienecke graduated from Portland State with a double major in Computer Science and Russian.

#myPSUstory: "My mother is an immigrant from the Philippines. My father is American from German and Russian immigrants. The first time that I got any experience with what life is like in the Pacific Northwest was one summer in high school when we drove all the way up to Seattle. I thought, wow, there are trees everywhere. The air feels fresh. So I started to look for schools and I found Portland State University.

"I was really lucky from a young age, I just had that calling toward computer science. Since middle school I already knew that I was going to work in computer science and I just followed through.”

Language was a secondary interest, but after enrolling in the Russian Flagship program it became just as important. Yves' training in Russian allowed for unique computer science opportunities, including an internship with the University of Helsinki, working toward building a language platform like Grammarly for Russian.

“My work in particular, is basically developing some machine learning models, and using that to correct sentences for people who are learning and writing academic papers."

As he looks toward a future career in language and machine learning, Yves hopes to elevate the discussion about missing representation of minority groups from the community.

“A lot of my colleagues unfortunately think that because they're programmers or just working on code they don't have to consider the social impact and the ethics of their work. Now starting at Portland State University, they are working toward a more ethical future with the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence so I’d like to go more down that road."
