CFD Simulation of Recovery Boiler Combustion | Predictive Engineering

Our latest CFD case study covers our work on a newly built recovery boiler to estimate operational temperatures, CO emissions, and NOx emissions. The recovery boiler is fueled solely by black liquor that is sprayed into the lower furnace.

One challenging aspect of black liquor combustion is the droplets swell in size (4 to 5 times original diameter) during the drying and devolatilization reactions. These effects were captured by using customized functions to simulate particle swelling during combustion.

When tackling a tough simulation problem, whether CFD or a tricky nonlinear analysis with LS-DYNA, there is very little that trumps experience. We feel that our experience provides a competitive edge to our clients to obtain the absolute best design. As for project costs, it is not unusual for our FEA or CFD consulting services to save our clients money given more efficient use of materials or by limiting testing to one prototype.

Why Your Project Will be Right:
Predictive Engineering has been offering mechanical engineering analysis services for more than twenty years. We have over 800+ successful projects to our credit. Our work has been strain gauged, drop-tested, benchmarked, validated, proof tested, shaker-tabled and implemented in hundreds of designs. We have optimized structures from deep-diving submarines, tail rotor blades on a Sikorsky Helicopter, high-temperature hydrogen reactors, composite antenna systems, 3,000 HP transmissions, NQA-1 nuclear waste processing vessels to R&D satellites for the US Air Force. Additionally, we have extensive experience with LS-DYNA over the last 15 years and have done projects on: projectile impact, pyro-shock detonation, fracture of ductile and brittle materials, drop-testing of composite structures, electron-beam welding and impact of metal, plastic, elastomer and foam structures. Least we be too technical, we have also successfully modeled the shaker-table transport of French fries using the discrete element method (DEM).
