There’s no secret that we at Ruckus LOVE the science behind what we do. If you do too, we’ve got a super cool podcast treat for your ears and brain!

We are thrilled to be able to use some incredible industrial engineering products from Olympus IMS, and proud to say our two companies share the same commitment to actively pursuing the development of new technologies and the spirit of science. This week, Shawn talks with Emilie Peloquin of the InspectTech podcast to chat about how our use of their ultrasonic technology allows us to better serve our customers at a more accurate level to determine potential damage to a frame that can’t be seen just by visual inspection. Give it a listen, and learn some really cool insights into what makes Ruckus truly unique in our commitment to Better Service Through Science.

Today we added a high-definition digital inspection microscope with UV lighting. This is to support our ever-expanding inspection and composites analysis services.

For example, this is what it can look like when a steer tube is over-tightened... But, don't worry; this is just a quick preview of what we will be adding to our Bike Science Friday series.

What will win ASTM D3359-17 "fancy tape" or the paint adhesion on the most expensive carbon fiber bikes on the market?

We invite you to join us for our next installment of Bike Science Friday when we will be visiting our playground of abandoned carbon frames to use a cutting-edge technique to test paint adhesion. Our methodology may seem questionable, however, it conforms to international standards. Honest.

Our motto is “Better Service through Science,” and we are excited to announce a new series of posts exploring the intersection of cycling and science. Some posts will be juicy little morsels to be savored in a few minutes between Zoom meetings, and others will take a deeper dive into the science and technology that inform evolving best practices in carbon fiber composite design, maintenance, and repair. There will be content relevant for a range of audiences, including bicycle owners, bicycle technicians, and materials scientists.

And what kind of bicycle mad scientists would we be if we didn’t conduct our own experiments? We will be sharing the results of our investigations into topics running the gamut from cringe-worthy use of impact testing to take carbon fiber composite to places they didn’t want to go, to how the sweat generated on your bicycling adventures is affecting your steerer tube, to testing of paint and clear coat peel strength, and many others.

So please join us next week when we will be kicking off the series with a visit to the world of materials science to explore surface energy: what it is, how it’s measured, and why it’s considered in the repair of carbon fiber bicycles.

Bottom bracket-- the harbinger of maintenance, the king of creak, the sultan of squeak, the colossus of crunch.

The bottom bracket can cause unlimited annoyance and frustration. We have seen issues from every style (BSA, BB30, Pressfit, etc.) for three primary reasons—misalignment, roundness, and corrosion.

Let’s cover misalignment. A shaft or bearing misalignment primarily comes in two flavors.

Parallel misalignment is when the non-drive side and the drive side shells are not aligned to each other.

Axial or Offset misalignment is when the non-drive side and the drive side central axis of rotation are offset from each other.

These conditions can exist on ANY bottom bracket shell system unless it is a continuous tube or meticulously aligned during production (which CAN happen). Misalignment always leads to premature bearing wear and significant rotational drag.

IT IS LITERALLY STEALING YOUR POWER

We are developing a system to quantify and measure misalignment between bottom bracket bearing interfaces….WITH LASERS.

“Leave No Trace In Outer Space!”

We are excited to announce our new “Space Adventure Shovel” After years of extensive research and development. Ruckus is excited to release a product that will serve adventurous terranauts traveling to our rusty red neighbor, Mars. Made from aerospace-grade titanium and designed with input from renowned mad engineers the “Space Adventure Shovel” will be able to stand up to the rigors of space travel and planetary exploration.

Founder and lead designer Shawn Small said, “With travel increasing to Mars we saw a need for products that help adventurers follow Leave No Trace practices while out recreating their favorite scenes from the Martian or visiting early rover landing sites. Our hope is that SAS will help keep our cosmic neighborhood clean and free of human contaminants long into the future. Today we are elated to be at the forefront of space exploration and furthering the cause to make humans interplanetary!”

The Space Adventure Shovel features:
Grade 9 aerospace titanium
A compact, slim profile that fits in most retail space suit pockets
Antimicrobial coating to facilitate sanitary storage
Weighted at exactly 42 grams

Bikes were a source of escape and stability for many long-time riders this year, and we welcomed many new cyclists to the fold. 2021 is still going to be a challenging and troubling year, but there is a lot of hope coming.

We got to help people keep a little bit of sanity through the year, and we look forward to helping more cyclists keep the good times rolling in 2021.

Wave to your fellow cyclists.
Always ask a cyclist on the side of the road/trail, “You good?” or, “Got everything?”
Take care of each other.
Stay safe out there.
Bring the Ruckus.

Approximately 3 years ago, I found out I have a rare genetic lung disorder called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. Most human bodies make a useful protein that helps their lungs regenerate and stay healthy; mine does not. While it's possible that I may never exhibit symptoms, people with Alpha-1 usually develop the first signs and symptoms of lung disease between ages 20 and 50 and often develop emphysema.

After thinking about a few things that I love (lung disease awareness, riding bikes), I jumped in and joined the 'Reach the Beach' century bike ride from Portland to Pacific City. Reach the Beach - Cycling is a one-day fundraiser to support the scientific research, education, and advocacy programs of the American Lung Association American Lung Association. Like most events this year, it had to be canceled, but I decided to still train and do it alone. I will ride 104 miles this Friday to support the American Lung Association and help bring more awareness to lung disease.

If you would like to show your support for me or anyone you know with some lung disease, please donate using the link. All proceeds go directly to the American Lung Association and may help me get that set of robot lungs some day.

It has been a rough time for everyone on the west coast. Many people, towns, and businesses have lost everything and will need help to rebuild. Here at Ruckus we were far from the path of the fires, but our air quality was at hazardous levels for over a week.

Out of concern for everyone’s safety here at the shop, we have been closed since last Friday and today is our first day back. We have a lot of filters to change and surfaces to wash down, but we always take these times to learn about our operational robustness and bounce back stronger and smarter than before. 2020 can’t keep us down.

Thank you Ruckus Composites!!
Hi Ruckus Corporation, will you do small jobs on spec. For example make for my company 3 to 4 prints of carbon fiber mask for a stage production from a clay model I give you. Perhaps you want to give your employees a creative job? We will pay but our budget is small. Please respond to my email. [email protected] Here's a photos of one of our mask creatures. We want to make our next show with Carbon Fiber masks. We tour internationally and we could offer your company a sponsorship of the show as well.
Your work is amazing! We have sent you two Giant TCR frames for repair and they came back as if the cracked seat stays never happened.
Picked up a repaired frame at the warehouse sale!! Excited to see the final product assembled and spinning all over the Gorge!
I just saw this video, and it made me think of Ruckus Composites! 😄
Are cracked carbon shoe soles able to be repaired?
Hi Ruckus Composites, I have a query. Would it be possible to make the new Formula 1 Halo out of carbon? Despite being made out of titanium, the current Halo is very heavy for all of its strength. Follow-up question: would it be reusable after an impact? If not, would making it out of carbon make it cheaper than the titanium version currently adorning the world's fastest cars?
You all fixed Mike Kincaid's bike many years ago. Great job.
