This one is for the dogs, literally! Although every day is #NationalDogDay in the hearts of puppy parents, this year is special - many canines (and other animals, too!) have found their fur-ever home because of the mass shift to working from home.

Over the last year and a half, 14 dogs have joined our families! Say hi to our new pups and the humans that care for them. #NationalDogDay2021

Pedestrian safety is a top priority when considering any intersection. For the Florida Department of Transportation, we developed models that simulated vehicle and pedestrian behavior to explore the operational impacts of Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPI), while also studying the impacts of omitting the permissive portion of protected left turns. Here’s what we found:

How many roundabouts are in the United States? How about the world? Kittelson's Lee Rodegerdts, Ian Cameron, and a tremendous team of volunteers have been documenting the answer through the Roundabouts Database, which reached 20,000 entries earlier this month! More than half of these records are now for sites outside the United States, representing a significant expansion beyond the database’s roots from 20+ years ago.

While we typically work with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to track travel condition trends annually through the Source Book, in 2020, FDOT sought month-to-month tracking to better understand the drastic impact on travel patterns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s how we retrieved data monthly to assemble FDOT’s Current Conditions Mobility Reports:

When Costco Wholesale and adjacent developers identified a preferred site on the southeast corner of Chinden Boulevard and Ten Mile Road in Meridian, Idaho, they had an obstacle to overcome: significant roadway improvements were needed to support their planned developments. Learn about the collaboration between Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), Costco, and Kittelson to get these improvements funded and advance the project from 5% design to completed construction in two years: http://ow.ly/LNLg50FqYiM

Results are in from Kittelson's Spring 2021 Bike Challenge! We had an impressive turnout this year with 13 offices participating, more than 600 trips taken, more than 6,500 miles ridden, and 20 different reasons for getting out on a bike (including biking to the airport and to deliver a proposal). Congratulations to Radu Nan, who rode 962 miles and topped the individual leaderboard, as well as our Boston, Oakland, Boise, and Chicago offices for having the highest participation rates. We look forward to our next bike challenge this fall! #KittelsonPlusCommunity

#Juneteenth commemorates the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865—more than two years after it had been granted by the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we honor Juneteenth by continuing to educate ourselves, even when it's uncomfortable, and engaging in honest conversations as a firm and individually to work toward a better, more equitable future for everyone. As we pause and celebrate the progress and wins toward equality, we know that there is still much work to be done to fight oppression and injustice in our society.

Juneteenth is also now officially recognized as a federal holiday—the first new federal holiday since the creation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983! Learn more at www.juneteenth.com

Kittelson's Spring 2021 Bike Challenge, which concludes on Sunday, is dedicated to the memory of Kevin Yost. Kevin was a transportation analyst in our Sacramento office who lost his life in a car crash while on his way to the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals, Inc. (APBP) Conference in 2019. He was a promising planner and a passionate advocate for active transportation who is dearly missed.

We continue to look for ways to honor Kevin's life outside of our bike challenge. One way you can join us in celebrating Kevin is tagging the Instagram page @kevinsbikeride when you post your biking photos and share your favorite places to ride.

If Kittelson Portland has a new inbound, Brandon Nevers, please pass on a hearty Best Wishes from a close friend of Brandon's dad, Leroy, who I've been close with for nearly 70 years in Bay Center,South Bend, and now Tacoma WA. Brandon's mom Sue tells me his parents are thrilled to have him closer to their Washington State home.
