The Freshwater Trust

The Freshwater Trust The Freshwater Trust is a group of bold problem solvers designing and implementing data-driven solutions that protect and restore America’s freshwater.

Using science, technology, policy and finance, The Freshwater Trust builds and manages solutions that improve water quality and quantity. With data and 21st century tools and technologies, we enable smarter watershed management to happen faster and at a greater scale. We also employ our solutions on the ground for the benefit of both watersheds and the plants, animals and people that rely on them.

SHADE. We love to see it. The Freshwater Trust has worked with local small businesses, watershed councils, and the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission (MWMC) to restore streamsides in Oregon's Willamette River basin with native vegetation. Check out the before & the after here on Mill Race, a tributary of the Willamette. Taken in the same place 9 years after planting. This is what we call proof of impact.

Upper Sandy River Basin Habitat Restoration Project

Grantee: The Fresh Water Trust
Restoration Project: 216-3039
Project Status: Monitoring
Partners: BLM, USFS, City of Portland, NFWF, Ecotrust, and The Freshwater Trust

Summary

The Sandy River Basin Partners identified Salmon River and Still Creek as providing high quality anchor habitat for the basin’s native fish, and aligned on a goal of restoring these sub-watersheds to advance Sandy basin-scale restoration. Sandy River salmon and steelhead populations have declined over the last century due to degradation of habitat and other factors. The Freshwater Trust (TFT) took the lead on the Upper Sandy River Basin Habitat Restoration Project, which increased side-channel habitat and floodplain connectivity on Salmon River and Still Creek. Restoration actions included reactivation of flow to six historic side-channels, construction of 51 large wood habitat structures, restoration of two alcoves, and placement of additional large wood in side-channels and on stream margins. This project was part of a larger, multi-year watershed scale restoration effort, and builds on similar successful projects completed in the basin by TFT and the Partners since 2008. Post-project monitoring followed construction to establish as-built conditions, physical habitat surveys were repeated in summer 2016 and after bank full events thereafter, and fish surveys occur seasonally based on time of use.

It’s Some of America’s Richest Farmland. But What Is It Without Water?

In America’s fruit and nut basket, water is now the most precious crop of all.

A California farmer decides it makes better business sense to sell his water than to grow rice. An almond farmer considers uprooting his trees to put up solar panels. Drought is transforming the state, with broad consequences for the food supply.

Juvenile Coho - Clear Fork

Just a few of our greatest fans. 🐟♥️🐟 These are juvenile coho in the lower reach of Clear Fork, a critical tributary of the Sandy River. This area has a long history of wood removal that's negatively impacted the quality and complexity of fish habitat here. Last year, by adding large wood structures, we restored 12 acres of floodplain and improved nearly 2,000 feet of side channel at this site. This created the kind of slow water, off-channel environments where coho clearly thrive. Video captured by our restoration monitoring coordinator this week.

Lake Mead is around 143 feet below 'full,' a deficit roughly the height of the Statue of Liberty.

The Lake Mead reservoir is poised to become the focal point of one of the country's most significant climate crises: water shortages in the West.

Summertime and the restoration is not easy but oh so impactful. Update from the field: New projects, implemented in partnership with the City of Ashland, are coming along. We’ve planted 7 acres and have another 8 in preparation for planting this Fall. Three of the 5 projects are located on the lands that were burned during the Alameda fire. The projects will accelerate the recovery process and secure the resilience of the landscape. We know from experience that areas with invasive plants burn hotter and quicker than restored ones with native species.

Update from the field: In Solano County, California, we just recently installed new sensors that are going to help with tracking water use efficiency. This is Sweetsense Inc. next generation gateway and sensor that includes Swarm's low cost satellite network, and it's the first one in commercial operation in the U.S. This partnership allows us to capture water data in real time, because you can't manage what you don't measure. The Freshwater Trust restored acres of Jan's land along the Rogue River. It's now a thriving project that provides shade for the river and its native fish species, prevents erosion, and filters nutrients.

Tis the season to do some monitoring. We're fortunate to be out on rivers and creeks throughout the West these days checking on the status of our projects. In some cases, projects will be monitored for decades. THIS is how we make sure we have an impact and why we can tell you that without a doubt, your dollars are being put to good use. On Thursday, June 3, our Restoration Project Manager Eugene Weir will be hosting a restoration workshop at Dunn Ranch Center for food and Agriculture. He'll share how we worked with the ranch to improve habitat for native fish species in Neil Creek. If you're in the area, sign up below!

Eugene Weir shares success stories from the restoration along Neil Creek. Now a thriving habitat for all types of wildlife, including coho and chinook salmon spawning. There are many examples of how restoration efforts can coincide with farming and ranching. Read more about the restoration here.

Changing the System - The Freshwater Trust Approach

WOW. Immerse 2021, our first virtual benefit, was even more of a success than we could have EVER imagined. We had more than 300 attendees and together raised $90K - quadrupling our goal. Every year, this event's intention is to bring attendees deeper into our work and mission, and even virtually, we were able to do that. Huge thank you to all our ticket holders, sponsors, business partners, and donors. This would have not been the success it was without your support. Thank you! Here's a short part of last night's program.
