Complaints - Alabama Department of Environmental Management

Copied from Knowles and Sullivan: Update on the proposed rendering plant on Steele Station Road - I spoke with Sen. Andrew Jones. He is very concerned about this proposed project. He contacted ADEM and asked they conduct a public hearing before they consider whether to grant the permit to proceed. ADEM told him they would conduct a public hearing, so I should be getting notice of the hearing and other details in the near future. I will share that when I get those details. This is very important because a public hearing will delay the approval of the permit and give us time to object locally before the project can proceed. So, huge and many thanks to to Sen. Andrew Jones for getting us this hearing which gives us time to organize the local opposition to the project.

I want to encourage everyone who objects but who has not already filed their objection with ADEM to do that this week. Theresa Drummond was kind enough to find an online portal for complaints at http://app.adem.alabama.gov/complaints/submission.aspx but you an also email them directly to the air permit division at [email protected]. Reference "Proposed Etowah County Rendering Facility 370-0051." The air permit division is who is handling this permit application so this gets it directly to them. While this is primarily a local issue, filing a complaint with ADEM is so important. The more objections we can say have formally been filed the more local officials and Pilgrim's Pride can see the community will not tolerate Gadsden officials trying to locate this proposed facility in the middle of homes, schools, churches and businesses.

I have been working with Choice Fabricators and so many members of the community on a strategy to further express your constitutional rights to object to this project through appropriate public forums and other means. The level of support and desire to express your objections is overwhelming. Thanks to Sen. Jones we now have time to get that support organized in a way that can be the most effective and meaningful. More updates will come in the next few days about ways we can do that. In the meantime, please get those objections filed with ADEM. I would love to tell the elected officials who allowed this proposed facility to be placed around peoples' homes and business, as well Pilgrim's Pride, that we have 1,000 objections filed with ADEM. From the number of people who I have heard from, that number is very reachable. People from all over this county are extremely upset by this project. It it has truly been overwhelming.

Continued thank you to Rainbow City Mayor Joe Taylor and Rep. Craig Lipscomb for your support as well as Sen Jones. I invite any other local official who objects to this project to make that objection publicly known and publicly join our efforts to stop this project. I know there are a number of elected officials who object because I have spoken to them. In fact, none of the elected officials I have spoken to have expressed they support this project. So, let's get to the bottom of which elected officials do support it, find out why and enter into a constructive conversation about the community's concerns.

Rainbow City residents and business owners!!!A rendering plant is being developed on Steele Station Road between Lumbley Road and Pleasant Valley Road. This is something that you would typically want further out in the county, not in or around a city. (Research what a rendering plant is if you don't know.) There will be a meeting tomorrow 11/20 at 12:00 at the EMA building on airport Road. We are concerned about it and anyone else that is, this is your chance to be heard.
