Another recently completed project. I rarely get back to see completed projects but my client emailed me this morning to share photos and say how much they were enjoying their new deck. Plenty of home time and some agreeable sun make it a nice place to be. Supporting a hot tub that is going to weigh 7,000 lbs when full of water and people was not the most straight forward task ever. The yard was beautiful before this damaged lots of landscaping. I can't wait to see it with plantings around it.

Recently completed project. This was a whole house renovation with a couple of additions including a new garage with a master suite above, a new front porch that hides the second floor overhang and a new breakfast room and deck added to the rear. When spring comes and the plants are in the ground I'll get more and better photos. My happy clients make for good business.

Here's an interesting take on a project begun a couple of year ago. The way we use words becomes so important. My clients asked for a "modern" farm house. To me, as an architect, the word modern has a clear cut meaning. Here's how wikipedia defines it, " ...based upon new and innovative technologies of construction, particularly the use of glass, steel and reinforced concrete; the idea that form should follow function; an embrace of minimalism; and a rejection of ornament" My original efforts were rejected with prejudice. After reviewing the design I proposed and photos my client shared, I revisited the design and proposed the following. They designs are very different in appearance but share floor plans in bold strokes and concept. I'll try to figure out how to link to the original design.

Thought I'd share this - At times we work on projects diligently and passionately and think we've arrived at great solutions only to find we missed the mark when we sit down and present to the client. This was one such project. This doesn't mean the design was poor - it simply means it didn't resolve all the design challenges faced, or at least not the way the client had hoped. It is part of the process and it begins a dialog that helps refine the design and ultimately arrive at solutions that do work and make for happy clients. In this case I liked the design and thought I'd share it anyway. ....back to the drawing board.

These images are from a current project in the design phase. Part of the project entails removing a load bearing wall that currently runs front to back in the home and has just two openings - one that connects the living room with the kitchen and another that connects the living room to the foyer. The slatted wall that is shown at the bottom of the stair is in line with the former wall.

There's a timeless beauty to these and homes of today are finally catching up in that. Residences are being designed and altered to have open floor plans making homes so much more functional.

Whether renovated or restored, these five abodes from the 1950s are nifty as ever: http://bit.ly/1jhAlAL

DC Hillier's MCM Daily - The Tremaine House

Beautiful Neutra home. Interesting how the main living space is called "social quarters" which is ultimately what it is.

Of the Tremaine House Neutra poignantly wrote, “Like an albatross, the oceanic bird whose legendary powers of flight allow it to descend to land only to breed, the Tremaine House unfolds and spreads its mighty wings - hovering majestically in an ancient oak tree grove above Santa Barbara and the Paci…

Love these container houses. Really wonderful in design and reuse.
http://www.homedsgn.com/2014/04/14/22-modern-shipping-container-homes-around-the-world-correct-title/

A shipping container by itself is pretty boring, but even a brand new one is pretty cheap. With a little bit of imagination (and a lot work), some talended architects succeeded to design dwellings made of shipping containers, ranging from off-the-grid guest homes to full time single family homes. Sh...

Home renovations: Turning old into new, and vice versa - NorthJersey.com

A nice article in the Bergen Record featuring one of my recent projects.

Local architects, contractors and designers say homeowners often ask for one of two things; ‘Take my old house and update it just a little, but don’t remove the old-house charm’; or ‘Take my ugly duckling house and work that old-house magic into it.’

Pay to Sleep in Jail: Former Dutch Prison Turned Luxe Hotel

Feeling a little naughty right now. Maybe I should get locked up.

The Dutch have never been nervous about design, taboos and other interesting topics, especially when the topic of discussion is design. The Netherlands is home to some of the most simple yet unique concepts out there. This former prison turned luxurious hotel is just one example. Het Arresthuis of R...
