Natl CyberWatch Center's Program for Innovations in Cybersecurity Education

National CyberWatch works with some of the best cybersecurity educational innovators. Through the Innovations in Cybersecurity Education Program, they share their innovations, accelerate adoption of new ideas throughout the academic community and receive proper recognition for their work.

PROGRAM GOALS:
• Provide a platform for recognizing innovative ways that cybersecurity education is taught
• Disseminate educators’ innovations through the annual “Innovations in Cybersecurity Education” publication, National CyberWatch website, monthly newsletters, distribution to all National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded national cybersecurity centers/projects, visibility in upcoming journals, promotion at conferences, and robust social media campaigns
• Reinforce support for creative solutions to educational challenges, and help foster a climate for positive change in methods and techniques for teaching cybersecurity
• Provide the community with a growing inventory of programs from which to find and emulate good ideas

PROGRAM BENEFITS:
• Bring national prestige to the contributing educators and their institutions via the National CyberWatch Center, NSF and NSF-funded cybersecurity projects/centers
• Create a leadership role for the author(s), and make them part of a dynamic national network of innovators
• See what other schools are doing, and eliminate the reinvention of the proverbial wheel

A review panel of educators will evaluate submissions. All submissions will be in the publication, and a small number of top picks will be the awarded from each of the following categories: Curriculum, Faculty Development, Lab Activity, Local Partnership, Student

Awardees will be acknowledged during the opening plenary session at the 2018 Community College Cyber Summit (3CS), August 2-4, in Portland, Oregon. Additionally, all submissions will be included in the 2018 “Innovations in Cybersecurity Education” publication.

Cyber Strong: Preparing the Nation’s Cyber Workforce

Security Education and Awareness Special Interest Group Webinar Series

Friday, May 18, 2018, 1:00 – 2:00 PM (Eastern)

Cyber Strong: Preparing the Nation’s Cyber Workforce
Creating a Strong Cybersecurity Team through Education, Awareness, and Workforce Development

Ms. Nancy Limauro, DHS, Deputy Branch Chief, Cybersecurity Education & Awareness Branch
Ms. Noel Kyle, DHS, Program Lead, Cybersecurity Education & Awareness Branch

The Nation has an ever-growing need for cybersecurity professionals who can protect our networks and infrastructure from increasing cyber threats and attacks. According to a study by the Center for Cyber Safety and Education, there will be a shortage of 1.8 million information security workers by 2022. Building a skilled and agile cybersecurity workforce to fill these positions is a national challenge.
To address the shortage of skilled workers, it is critical for all communities to work together to coordinate cybersecurity awareness, education, training, and workforce development efforts. Current initiatives across the Federal Government help advance the cybersecurity workforce, particularly through training and professional development. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is leading such efforts through its Cybersecurity Education and Awareness (CE&A) Branch.
CE&A promotes the use of cybersecurity workforce development and training resources based on the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) National Cybersecurity Workforce Framework (NCWF). Co-developed by DHS, the Framework provides a common definition of cybersecurity, a comprehensive list of cybersecurity tasks, work roles, as well as the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform those tasks. By using the same language to describe the work, communities can coordinate their efforts and build a pipeline of professional cybersecurity workers.
CE&A has several cybersecurity training resources available for everyone. The Federal Virtual Training Environment (FedVTE) provides access to free cybersecurity training for any federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial government employee, as well as government contractors. National Initiative for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies (NICCS) Training Catalog provides a robust listing of cybersecurity and cybersecurity-related training courses offered in the U.S. The NICCS Training Catalog contains over 3,000 courses, with more added on a regular basis.
We will also share information about our Stop. Think. Connect.™ campaign to help promote safe online behavior. Stop. Think. Connect.™ resources provide partnership opportunities to academic institutions, government agencies/departments, as well as non-profit organizations.
Organizational Insights:
1. How to find CE&A awareness, education, and workforce development resources
2. How to use NCWF tools
3. How to partner with our Stop. Think. Connect.™ Campaign

Rapid-fire Cyber changes require a different approach - diversity of thought led by a diverse workforce. Given the changing cyber world we live in, where do you all see the CYBER world at in 2050 from a diversity and inclusion perspective? Where will the greatest opportunities exist for thought leaders and trailblazers? What can women and men do to launch or grow their CYBER careers in the interim? What calls to action to our practitioners, our employers, and our greater cyber community would you make?

The goal? For everyone to “own” security within the organization. The ideal state is that this is not the job of just one functional group, but that every employee has and knows their role in cybersecurity and are active and vocal advocates. For most of our organizations, this is not the case, a...
