Founded by Jim Oakley, an accomplished design engineer, in 1977, Mecmesin remains a privately owned company with regional offices in the US, China, Thailand and France. The focus of the company has always been to provide high quality test solutions, which are an affordable alternative to the many higher-priced systems available, enabling small and large businesses alike to undertake quality control checks on their products without compromising on precision and accuracy. The rugged design of these systems mean they can withstand tough factory conditions and perform tests at the point of production rather than having to use expensive laboratories to ensure consistent manufacture.

Mission: We manufacture force gauges, torque gauges, tensile testing and compression testing systems, torque testing systems and software. We offer 3 distinct levels of test system, which includes simple-to-use motorised systems, touch screen controlled systems, ideal for the shop floor, and fully-featured computer-controlled systems. Our test solutions enable you to measure according to BS, DIN, ASTM and ISO standards from 2.5N for our gauges, to our twin-column systems range testing up to 50kN! We have an extensive number of accessories and gripping fixtures. Unique application - bespoke solution As well as our standardised products, we are often called upon to design bespoke force and torque test solutions for specialised applications. Our special applications engineering team is able to design and then manufacture bespoke accessories, fixtures and fittings to your exact requirements. Syringes have to be tested to ensure they are safe and meet stringent international test standards and regulations. Mecmesin has over 40 years’ experience working with syringe manufacturers, providing equipment for a range of force and torque tests for quality control.

For example using force measurement equipment to test syringes by making sure that the plunger moves consistently, without stiction, reduces the chances of any jerky motion associated with inserting the needle painfully into the skin.

Quality-control checking of needle sharpness, by performing puncture-resistance testing, ensures that the needles themselves are all of a consistent standard and performing axial load and torque tests on Luer connectors to ISO 80369 ensures needles will fit securely into the connectors and not detach.

Dairy products have a variety of physical properties as they are made from complex microstructures of protein and fat. From the raw ingredients, though manufacturing procedures and post-manufacturing processes, the physical structure of dairy products can change as well as the subjective sensory properties consumers use to evaluate product quality.

The measurement of texture (from butter spreadability to curd firmness) is paramount in modern dairy, helping food technologists assess engineering performance and sensory quality throughout the manufacturing process. A manufacturer must be able to guarantee the consistency of their product, when used in prepared foods, in order to maintain a good quality end product.

Healthier alternatives must also retain familiar mouthfeel to that of their counterparts in order to convert consumers to the new product.

Mechanical pen injectors for delivering drugs, such as insulin, have found increasing acceptance over the traditional vial-and-syringe method. Advances in pen design have made models increasingly user-friendly, allowing superior accuracy for delivering small doses together with patients reporting less injection pain. To validate new pen injector designs and maintain quality when they are mass-produced requires extensive testing.

One such test measures the force required to operate the pen injector when administering the drug. It’s called the ‘break-loose and sustainability force’ and the test method is covered in ISO 11608-3 relating to finished containers for needle-based injection systems. It’s important for patients because, if you are undergoing treatment requiring frequent, low-volume injections, you will need to be using pre-filled cartridges and you want them to administer the drug into your skin in a nice smooth manner. Higher forces or jerky movement can lead to painful jabs of the needle.

The cardboard box is the unsung hero of countless deliveries every day. Over the weeks of COVID-19 lockdown confinement there has been a surge of home deliveries, with even online retail giants struggling to fulfil demands and hiring fleets of new workers.

Hearing the knock at the door to receive a package provides a small sense of normality and pleasure to many. And it is the humble cardboard box which is neatly and safely enabling the widespread distribution of goods.

Beyond household deliveries, cardboard is also an object serving on the frontline of public health services, enabling mass deliveries of vitally needed medical equipment.

Modern production and shipping have changed drastically, and the testing methods we use to measure a package’s strength have changed accordingly. These days, much of the shipping is done as boxes on pallets, delivering goods from one business to another business (B2B).

Testing the edge wall of a box for its stacking strength is the most sensible and reliable measure of how well the box will hold its form under the vertical weight during transit.

By using simple test methods such as the Edge Crush Test (ECT), companies benefit from understanding the maximum weight a box can withstand and the overall stacking strength.

As COVID-19 has rapidly spread around the world, there is a concerted global effort to find a vaccine. Millions in international funding is being pledged to vaccine development and to support clinical trials of the most promising prototype drugs. Vaccine delivery devices such as syringes and intranasal spray pumps have to be tested to ensure they are safe and meet stringent international test standards and regulations. Vaccine packaging also has to be tested to ensure the vaccine is protected and that sterile conditions are maintained up to the point of use.
