Interior alteration of an existing ranch style house into a modern residence. The interior walls were removed and trusses were built utilizing the roof rafters to free-span the width of the house. The cathedral ceiling, open living area, sliding glass wall, LED downlights, and other features will create a highly modern living environment.

The panorama is looking from the living room toward the sliding glass wall that will lead onto the deck.

This post is in response to questions about our Half-Timber Style Residence.

Dishner Moore Architects designed the addition in the half-timber style to match the existing house. Timber-framing (also known as half-timbering) is constructed using vertical and horizontal timbers joined together with mortise and tenon joints. The existing house and addition are standard stick-frame construction and not true half-timber structures. The elevations mimic the half-timber buildings in nearby Old Salem. Pictures of the Fourth House at Old Salem are included with this post. The Fourth House, built in 1768, is the oldest extant building in Old Salem. The streets and square of Salem (now referred to as Old Salem) were laid out in 1766 by the Moravians. The towns of Winston and Salem merged in 1913 to form the City of Winston-Salem.

The Moravians utilized half-timber construction due to the lack of large trees in close vicinity to the site. If larger trees had been available they would have built log houses. They were also unable to build brick structures due to the lack of lime needed for mortar to build load-bearing brick walls. Based on the materials available to them, the Moravians used short timbers to build timber-frame walls infilled with brick nogging. The non-structural walling (in this case brick with clay mortar) used to fill the spaces between the timbers is known as nogging. Refer to Architecture of the Old South: North Carolina for more information on the Moravians and Salem.
